opposite 是介词，在……对面。如：
讨论的时候，他坐在玛丽安的对面。

opposite也可以作形容词，表示“相对的；相反的”，如：
on the opposite side of the street 在街的对面
朝相反的方向行驶
throw cold water on泼冷水 throw off 抛弃，摆脱
throw away 浪费，拒绝throw down打倒，推翻 throw up呕吐
