American Council of Learned Societies
The American Council of Learned Societies, organized in 1919 for the purpose of advancing the study of the humanities
and of the humanistic aspects of the social sciences, is a nonprofit prising thirty-three national scholarly
groups. The Council represents the humanities in the United States in the International Union of Academies, provides
fellowships and grants-in-aid, supports research-and-planning conferences and symposia, and sponsers special projects and
scholarly publications.
