Gates is chairman of Microsoft Corporation, the worldwide leader in software. Microsoft employs more than 61,000 people in102 countries and regions. Born on Oct. 28, 1955, Gates grew up in Seattle. Gates began puters at age 13. In1973, Gates entered Harvard University asa freshman. While at Harvard, Gates developed a version of the programming language BASIC. In his junior year, Gates left Harvard to devote his energies to Microsoft, pany he had begun in1975. Guided bya belief that puter would bea valuable tool on every office desktop and in every home, he began developing software for puters. Gates ’ foresight and his vision for puting have been central to the ess of Microsoft and the software industry. Gates was married on Jan. 1,1994, to Melinda French Gates. They have three children.
