Writing to Learn
Writing to Learn looks at how poetry can be used as an enjoyable way to teach
literacy across the primary curriculum. It includes examples of poems and stories by
children and clear descriptions of how to teach creatively within the framework of
the National Literacy Strategy.
This book includes:
• cross-curricular approaches with sections on poetry and science; poetry and
personal, social and moral education; poetry and art and music; poetry and
religious education
• advice on different ways children pose their writing and -
puters can be a valuable aid to children’s writing
• examples of published poetry and how it can be used to stimulate good writing
• advice on bringing writers into schools and publishing school anthologies
This book will prove invaluable to teachers and parents keen to teach writing who
see children as active and critical learners. It shows that if we expect great things in
writing from children, we get them.
Fred Sedgwick has many years of experience as a teacher and is now a freelance
lecturer and writer. He is the author of a number of books on primary education,
including Read my Mind (1997), Thinking about Literacy (1999) and Shakespeare and
the Young Writer (1999), all published by Routledge. His poetry for children has
been widely anthologized.
