Developmental Biology
Chapter 2: Cell signaling in development
A signal from one group of cells influences the development of an adjacent group of cells
Cell signaling in development
Signal proteins play essential roles in major developmental processes: Cell proliferation & programmed cell death
Cell fate determination & differentiation
Cell migration
Induction,
Morphogenesis and Pattern formation, etc.

These signal proteins are used repeatedly to construct ans such as the heart, the kidneys, the teeth, the eyes. Moreover, these proteins are functionally conserved throughout the animal kingdom.

The signal molecules act by binding to receptors in the membrane of the responding cell. This binding activates specific signal transduction pathway via the biochemical cascade that ultimately leads to change in gene expression, with a particular set of target genes being switched on or off.
Signal proteins and signal transduction pathways
Paracrine factors (旁泌素)
The fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) and receptor tyrosine kinase ( RTK) pathway
The Hedgehog family and Hh pathway
The Wnt family and Wnt pathway
The TGF-beta superfamily and Smad pathway
Other paracrine factors
epidermal growth factor,
platelet-derived growth factor,
neurotrophin,
