情态动词本身有一定的含义,但不能单独作为句子的谓语,必须后面紧跟动词原形情态动词没有人称和数的变化.

常用于口语之中=may.

表“猜测”
用于疑问句或否定句之中.
a. --- Can the story be true ?
---No, it can’t be .
b. He can’t be at home now , is he?

---Yes, please.

---Yes, you may . / can
---No, you mustn’t.
可能 may be
表“推测”.
常用于肯定句中.
---Where is Tom ?
---He may be in the reading room ,for he likes reading there.
I may be a teacher when I grow up .
= Maybe I will be a teacher when I grow up .
