The Age of Romanticism(1790-1865)
Teaching time: 20 periods
Teaching purpose: through introducing this chapter, make the students understand the background of American romanticism and the representative writers and their main works.
一. Historical background
Stretched from the end of 18th century
----The treaty of Paris in 1783 put an end to the American Revolution,
----In the following decades, the American government had done a great work in establishing a strong nation.
----The outbreak of the French Revolution
---gave the Americans more confidence
---challenged the unity of the government.
----The war on Great Britain was declared in 1812,
--- the United States claimed that the chief causes of the war were impressments and neutral rights
---The land-hungry men of the West wished to grab all of Canada into their possession
--- the southern plantation owners hoped to conquer Florida from Spain
--- resulted in the declaration of the war.
---New York and New England in general opposed it.
----The Treaty of Ghent was signed in 1814, which put an end to the war, but did not say a word about impressments and neutral rights.
----Although the war began and went on amid internal division, its end did contribute to the development of the United States by strengthening the sentiment of national unity and patriotism.
----The two triumphs within half a century over the strongest nation in the world gave Americans a new basis for pride and self-confidence. From that time onward nationalism began its real advance.
