The Background of the Novel
The story happened in the early 19th century, when England was a classic patriarchy society with a strong sense of class contradiction. Working people were not only exploited and oppressed by the corrupt landed aristocracy, but also ruled by the emerging bourgeois nobles. Meanwhile women and proletariats were oppressed too, whose personal rights had been deprived. The middle class were in worse condition, because their wives and daughters were not regarded as
