Ⅰ.Definition
A figure of speech which contains an understatement of emphasis, and therefore the opposite of hyperbole. It achieves its effect of emphasizing a fact by deliberately understanding it ,impressing the listener or the reader more by what is merely implied or left unsaid than by bare statement.
也就是说,Understatement 是通过故意轻描淡写或缩小事物来加强印象,而Hyperbole 是通过故意夸大事态来加强印象。又因为英国男人喜欢把话说得委婉一些,温和一些,故把Understatement 称为男性语言(male speech),而把Hyperbole称为女性语言(female speech).低调陈述既表示一种礼貌和含蓄,也表示一种嘲弄和讽刺。
低调陈述作为言语行为的语用策略受到学者们的关注,他们从不同的角度对它进行了研究。
Colston & O‘Brien(2000)指出:低调陈述是一种较弱的反语形式(week verbal irony)。低调陈述的否定标记并非是为了否定某个观点,而只是为了淡化语义,暗示字面义与言下义之间差异。
Leggett & Gibbs (2000):低调陈述可以用来表达说话人愿望、想法和见解,引起较肯定的情感;不具敌意和威胁、体现谅解,较少蔑视。
“Understatement”功能
使用Understatement 的目的和功能和使用Hyperbole 相似,不是为了欺骗某人, 而是为了增强人们对所述事物的印象。
换句话说, 其功能就是为了强调, 故意通过轻描淡写或缩小事物加深人们对某事物的印象。
徐鹏(苏州大学)认为Understatement 类似“向下夸张”, 钱钟书先生说: “夸张以不可能为能,⋯⋯因此我们可以这样推断认为, 低调陈述以能为不可能。
