WhereasArticle4(1)and(2)ofDirective1999/2/ECoftheEuropeanParliamentandoftheCouncilof22February1999ontheapproximationofthelawsoftheMemberStatesconcerningfoodsandfoodingredientstreatedwithionisingradiation(4)hereinafterreferredtoas‘theframeworkDirective`providesfortheadoptionofalistoffoodstuffswhich,totheexclusionofallother,maybetreatedwithionisingradiation;whereasthislistshallbeestablishedinstages;
Whereasdriedaromaticherbs,spicesandvegetableseasoningsarefrequentlycontaminatedand/anismsandtheirmetaboliteswhichareharmfultopublichealth;
Whereassuchcontaminationand/orinfestationcannolongerbetreatedwithfumigantssuchasethyleneoxidebecauseofthetoxicpotentialoftheirresidues;
Whereastheuseofionisingradiationisaneffectivemeansofreplacingthesaidsubstances;
mitteeforFood;
Whereassuchtreatmentisthereforeintheinterestofpublichealthprotection,
HAVEADOPTEDTHISDIRECTIVE:
Article1
(3)oftheframeworkDirective,munityinitialpositivelistoffoodandfoodingredients,hereinafterreferredtoas‘foodstuffs`,thatmaybetreatedwithionisingradiation,togetherwiththemaximumdosesauthorisedfortheintendedpurpose
