CHAPTER IGeneral Introduction
Overvies to detect and discriminate volatile pounds from the vastrange of odours present in the environment. In animals, this sensory ability is used for such behavioursas to find a mate,locate food sources and detect enemies. Chemical cues are used extensively in animalsas a means of munication both higher animals. Receptors for sensorymodalities, such as olfaction, taste,mechanosensation, and thermo and hygrosensation, are situated inthe antenna. The antennal olfactory sense is of special importance to insects, as it provides informationon the chemical quality of, .,food sources or oviposition sites,and is also used in intraspecificmunication via pheromones. These senses supply the animal's nervous system ationsubsequently used to generate a simplified internal representation of the plex external al to decide upon and execute the appropriate behavioral response given olfactory system allo to recognize volatile cues that confer the capacity todetect food, predators and mates. The sense of taste monly alloination of solublestimulants that elicit feeding behaviors,and it can also initiate innate sexual and reproductive responses(Sanchez-Gracia et al 2009).
