My Last Duchess
The poem draws its materials from historical events involving Alfonso, the Duke of Ferrara, who lived in the 16th century. The Duke speaks in the poem,carrying out the monologue. From what he says, the reader gets to know that he has recently been widowed and that he is ing an emissary who e to negotiate the Duke’s marriage to the daughter of another noble are standing in front of the portrait of the last duchess, his wife. From his explanation of the picture in monologue form, the es to see through the Duke’s personality. Though seemingly polite and with elegant manners, he is actually the killers inside.
Browning aims to analyze plexities in the character of nobilities, namely the hidden cruelty. The Poem is written in rhyming pentameter lines, with the use of enjambment where sentences do not conclude at the end of lines, thus showing Duke’s wavering mentality. The enjambed lines disclose the fact that the speaker’s trying to control his conversation and hint that the speaker is rushing through certain parts of the monologue.
