puter is also called puter puter—a tool that is a programmable, electronic device that accepts input, performs operations or processing on the data, and outputs and stores the results.

The relationships between these four puter operations are shown in Figure 1-1.

All general-puters require the following ponents:
Central processing unit (CPU).
Memory (fast, expensive, short-term memory).
Mass storage device (slower, cheaper, long-term memory).
Input device.
Output device.
Second Generation (1959-1964): Transistor

Fourth Generation (1971-Present): VLSI integrated circuits
