The Development and Application of Corpus Linguistics
Abstract:
In Europe, corpus linguistics has e a major branch of linguistics. Corpus linguistics is based on the corpus for language analysis and study of science. With the development puter work technology arising in the new linguistic research field and research method, corpus linguistics could select materials, reflect and record the actual language use. People can use the corpus observation to grasp language facts, analyze and study the rules of language systems.
Under the general situation of study on corpus linguistics in Europe, Chinese linguists began to set foot on this field in 1920s. Corpus linguistics provides a new method and thought both in language study and teaching. It takes real language data as research objects and analyzes language facts systematically. It studies the language performance rather than the petence. That is to say, it finds the rules of language performance by means of investigating the actual use of language.
This paper introduces the development and application of corpus linguistics in China, reviews the studies based on English corpora in Europe and researches the application of English corpus in the study and translation of foreign languages. It also provides many ways for learners to study and research corpus linguistics as well as helps they continue learning language.
