我对 hundred, thousand 和 million 三词用法的困惑
我们先看看几道中考试题:
1. Many ______ trees should be planted on the mountains. (2007 年山东青岛)

now. (2003 年江苏盐城 )
A. hundred of B. hundreds for C. hundred  答案: C

大家知道,中考在考查学生数词的用法时, hundred, thousand 和 million 三词用法是考查热点。我们
都知道当它们前面有具体的数词修饰时, hundred, thousand 和 million 不能加 -s, 当它们后面接 of 时,
它们必须加 -s. 不管哪种情况,它们都是直接接名词,名词前不能有限定词。
但是,如果 hundred, thousand 和 million 前面有 many 和 several 等不确定的数修饰时,该如何表达
呢?通过上面三题的参考答案,我们可以得出这么一个结论: many 是个概数,可以组成 many(hundreds,
thousands, millions)of +名词复数; several 相当于一个具体的数字, 组成 several((hundred, thousand,
million)+ 名词复数。
然而,笔者查阅了大量资料,似乎又不是这样。关于它们的用法,有的甚至截然相反。
第一种说法 :(《牛津高级英汉词典》)

hundred 的用法之一:“说 a, one, two,several, 时, hundred 后面不加 -s; 若前面没有
数目或数量,可用 hundreds(of , ) 。Hundred 或 hundreds 均用复数动词”。
这里它把 several 看成了具体数词。上面第二题选 C 可能就是这么来的。
第二种说法 :(《英语基础词汇用法详解词典》)

“下面两个短语都有‘几百人’的意思: several hundred of people; several hundreds of people ”。
照这种说法,上面第二题似乎应该选 A 才对。
