Abstract Traditional RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disk) backup system requires long "backup window" during the backup process. It is eptable to the mercial application which calls for 7 × 24-hour continuous service. A snapshot system for the RAID system i s designed to solve the backup problem. The system operates on the level of RAID using virtual view snapshot technology. It provides excellent performance and data protection features for online storage system backup. A snapshot system software frame is de signed based on the RAID system in which snapshot is designed as a module of the whole system. Ensuring modular software design at the same time, it meets the right RAID online backup capacity requirements. To solve the problem of data consistency, a log r ecord is used in the snapshot system. It ensures the data and meta-data consistent even when the RAID system collapses. A snapshots associated is invented to meet the demand for creating a number of snapshots on the same storage system. It greatly reduces the storage space consumption and overall performance storage system losses. A snapshot system software framework is designed and a detailed functional description is presented including the work ing flow of ponents and modules etc. In addition, the snapshot system on RAID system is tested through a professional testing tool and the results shows: The creation and deletion of snapshots could pleted within about half a minute and the overall I/O performance is about 90% compared to the original RAID system without snapshot system.
