Unit 2 Grammar—Direct Speech and Indirect Speech (II)
Requests mands

This teaching period is a grammar lesson. The students are expected to make clear what mand is and what a request is, and how to turn Direct Speech into Indirect Speech in this period.
Teaching procedures:
Step 1: lead-in
To offer students a supposed situation and get them to make clear what mand is and what a request is.
Task one: Lily is busy washing dishes, and her husband is watching TV. The room is in a mess, so she wants her husband to clean the floor.
If you were the wife, what would you say to the husband?
Student A: Would you please help me clean the floor?
Student B: Go and clean the floor
……
If you were the husband, which kind of version would you like to hear? Why?
Students: The second one. Because the first one is mand and it sounds impolite. The second is a request and it sounds polite.
Step 2: Summarizing the difference mands and requests.
Task two: to get students to look at the following sentences in Exercise 2 on Page 12 and classify them mands and Requests and then check the answers.
