The Gift of the Magi
The Cop and the Anthem

4. Character and Characterization
Character: any person in a creative writing. Formerly, we also used “hero” or “heroine” for the main character in a story, because most of early literary writings did have stereotypes (类型化人物) and the main character was often the heroic type. Some modern fictional writings have anti-heroes (反英雄人物) as their main characters, that is, people with qualities opposite to those a hero represents.
Protagonist (主人公):a neutral term for a principal character。
Antagonist (主要对立人物):the rival or enemy of the protagonist, but can also refer to a situation (for example, poverty) or an event (for example, a storm) that challenges the protagonist.
Foil(陪衬人物): a supporting character whose role in the story is to highlight the protagonist by presenting parison or a contrast to him.
Round character (立体人物)
Flat character (扁平人物)
usually has more than one quality
constructed around a single idea or quality
grows in the course of the story development
does not develop in the course of narration
changes his view of the world or attitude to the people
retains the same trait throughout a story
complex and not always easy to understand
predictable
Characterization (人物塑造): the process of creating imaginary characters so that they exist for the reader as lifelike persons.
Three methods of Characterization:
(1) directly
(2) Indirectly
(3) the presentation from within a character’s mind
5. Style, Tone and Irony
A man’s language is the man. The typical way a writer presents his language is his style (风格), something that marks him out as different from other writers. Style is an overall effect achieved by a writer’s creative use of language which gives his work individual personality.
