Over 20 million of the population are aged 50 years and over More than a million people are aged 85 or over
More than 11 million people are over retirement age (65 for men and 60 for women). This is % of the total UK population.
Women over 90 outnumber men by about three to one
There are over 7 million retired women, 63% of all those who are retired.

The National Pensioners' Convention would like to see the basic state pension brought up to the level of the Minimum e Guarantee and in the long term for them to be linked to average earnings.

In November 2006 the mision report was published with mendations on changing the pension system :
phasing out means testing
returning the link between state pensions and average earnings
basing the state pension on residency rather than national insurance contributions - to tackle the problems faced by women in particular.

The government
The government does not follow any of the mendations and there is no date set for introducing a new bill.
The government hasn’t given specific targets for reducing the number of pensioners in poverty.
Nevertheless, the government know that they have to act and the report is likely to be central to any changes that happen in ing decade.
In April 2006 new pension rules were introduced aimed at make saving for retirement simpler. This followed the government's last Pensions Bill which focused on reducing the number of pensioners living in poverty in the future.
Other problems
Many older people still live in conditions of deprivation and poverty and social exclusion, and the older the person, the greater the deprivation. This was revealed in a three year study of the old living in poor wards in Liverpool, Manchester and London which identified 70 per cent living with some form of social exclusion.
