Hard to measure: many figures quoted, but what do they measure??
Tends to be dominated by hype, glamour and ‘quick-buck’ mentality
So we know it’s big, glossy and important ..…but what actually is it??

“…. applications that bring together multiple types of media: text illustrations, photos, sound, voice, animations and video.” ‘Multimedia Demystified’, Apple, 1995
“… puter-mediated presentation that includes at least two of the following elements: text, sound, still graphic images, motion graphics and animation.” ‘Theoretical Foundations of Multimedia’, Tannenbaum, 1998

Problems with Textbook Definitions
Textbook definitions of multimedia are generally:
Too vague - anything with two media? (a book with pictures? TV? Nintendo? Anything on puter? )
Too narrow or arbitrary - “if it is not in my book/in my specialist subject area, then it isn’t multimedia”

Some application areas or products have been widely identified as ‘multimedia’
If you work on these sorts of applications, you are in the ‘multimedia industry’
