The Four Noble Truths (“四圣谛说”) What is the “ Four Noble Truths ”? ? The doctrine (教义) of the “ Four Noble Truths ” is mon property of all schools of Buddhist thought. ? According to this doctrine, all life is inevitably suffering; suffering is due to craving (渴望) ; suffering can only be stopped by stopping craving; and the three truths can only be realized by following the Noble Eightfold Path (八正道) 四圣谛?其中“谛”原义是事物的内在含义或者意义, 在佛教中用来翻译梵语“ Satya ”,意思是真实无谬的道理.?苦圣谛() 集圣谛() 灭圣谛() 道圣谛() all life is inevitably suffering (苦圣谛) This is the noble truth of suffering: birth is suffering, aging is suffering, illness is suffering, death is suffering; sorrow, lamentation (哀悼) , pain, grief and despair are suffering; union with what is displeasing is suffering; separation from what is pleasing is suffering; not to get what one wants is suffering. 苦圣谛根据对现实的深刻观察,佛总结出人生的八大痛苦:生、老、病、死、爱别离、怨憎、求不得、五蕴炽盛。世间有情悉皆是苦,有漏皆苦,即所谓“苦谛”。 suffering is due to craving (集圣谛) This is the noble truth of the origin of suffering: it is this craving which leads to renewed existence, panied by delight and lust (欲望) , seeking delight here and there, that is, craving for sensual pleasures, craving for existence, craving for extermination (根除) 集圣谛之所以有这种种痛苦,是因为有产生痛苦的根源,主要是贪、嗔、痴三毒,这就是“集谛”。 suffering can only be stopped by stopping craving (灭圣谛) This is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering: it is cessation of that same craving, the giving up and relinquishing of it, freedom from it, do not relay on it. 要想去除痛苦,就要消灭产生痛苦的原因“贪、嗔、痴”,这就是“灭谛”,断尽烦恼,则得解脱灭圣谛 Freedom from suffering is possible by practicing the eightfold path. (道圣谛) ? This is the noble truth of the way leading to the cessation of suffering: it is the Noble Eightfold Truths (八正道) ; that is, right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness (警觉) and right concentration.
