●Moby-Dick was published in 1851 during what has been called the American Renaissance, which saw the publication of Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Scarlet Letter (1850) and Harriet Beecher Stowe, Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852) as well as Henry David Thoreau, Walden (1854), and the first edition of Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass (1855).
●With the publication of Typee,which was an immediate popular success, Melville was soon became known as the''man who lived among cannibals(食人部落)".
●MOBY DICK escape the romantic travel-tale mode of
Melville's earlier works and to become a unique and enduring at that time, the book was not popular with readers. The public was not ready for its brooding(阴险的) sometimes frighting speculations about man and God and the universe. They wanted the simple,romantic narratives of the Typee and Omoo sort.
