摘 要：本文主要就英汉日常言语交际中的元语用现象及其功能进行探索。首先指出言语交际中普遍存在的元语用现象，并对相关研究进行回顾；接着就元语用意识及其标示语进行分析和归类；然后重点探讨英汉语中元语用结构或词语在交际中的功能。类似研究有助于我们重新认识与元语用意识有关的部分附属结构或‘小词语’等在交际中的实际功能，同时对语言****得研究也具有重要的启示意义。

On Metapragmatic Phenomena and their Functions in Verbal Communication

Abstract: The present paper concentrates its attention on metapragmatic phenomena and their functions in verbal interaction of both Chinese and English. It first examines some phenomena in actual language use from the meta perspective and gives a general survey of the relevant studies; then metapragmatic awareness is discussed and its indicators are exemplified. And finally the emphasis is put on the communicative functions of those metapragmatic expressions in Chinese and English. Such a study might lead us to rethink about the functions of some parenthetical or ‘small’ structures, and has some implication for the research of second language acquisition.

1．元语用现象
在语言使用中，尤其是日常会话中，我们常会发现如下的类似用语：
（1）       What do you mean by that?
（2）       That’s not what I said.
（3）       这就是我的看法。
（4）       我想说的就是这些。
以上话语是言语交际中十分常见的现象，它们是有关语言本身或某一信息的指示性话语，即这些明示结构或话语往往借助语言本身表示它们的所指范围。不同于语言的其他用法，类似话语具有一定的指示性（indexicality），体现了说话人的一种元语用意识或语言使用的反射性（reflexivity），即人们可以借助自然语言指称或描写语言本身（Lyons, 1977）。这是一种元语言意义上的语言用法，本文统称为
元语用现象。
我们知道，元语言（metalanguage）是有关语言的语言，它可以对目标语言或目标信息进行标示、评说或者评述等。其中“meta-”是一个来自希腊语的前缀，相当于英语中的above，beyond或behind（Hornby, 1997），它是标志研究‘层面’转变的一种哲学语言，表示人们讨论的对象由客体(object)转变为讨论(talk)本身。那么，研究元语言的学问就是元语言学(metalinguistics)。
然而，元语用论或元语用现象却是二十世纪80年代中期才开始出现的一个术语，其中的典型代表是《语用学学刊》（Journal of Pragmatics，, , 1984）所登载的有关元语用论的研究专刊。后来Verschueren（1995，2000），Caffi（1998）等相继撰文讨论言语交际中的元语用现象，但一些有影响的语用学教材或专著，比如Gazdar（1979），Levinson（1983），Leech（1983），Thomas（1996）等都没有涉及元语用问题的讨论，只是近年来在Mey（1993，20
