cury Labeling As of July 1, 2007, products that contain mercury in any form must indicate mercury content via a labeling process in order to sell those products legally in the state of Vermont. Most types of LCD displays FL backlights that contain small amounts of mercury. The mercury is necessary in order for the backlight to function properly. LCD display manufacturers ply with this labeling requirement or they cannot sell products into Vermont. The labeling requirement is in place in order to inform the customer about the mercury content of a particular product PRIOR TO SALE. This means that not only should the label be included on the packaging and in the user’s manuals, but should also be included in munication tools such as sales sheets, catalogs, websites, order forms, etc. Increasingly, individual states are starting to be concerned about the impact that electrical waste has on the environment. Chances are good that these states, or even the federal government, will one day enact further legislation in order to limit the effect that discarded electronic equipment has on the environment, not only from mercury, but from other materials as well.
