Course Description and Objectives: This course is designed to help international graduate students work toward their goal of ing independent and skilled readers and writers in their disciplines. Course writing assignments focus on their disciplines and include summaries, and response p aper s, and essays . The course also address es plagiarism and citation of sources , ways to develop a more academic vocabulary, and grammar topics such as verbs, articles, and sentence control. Reading skills are strengthened using texts from students' academ ic courses. Whenever possible, students work on assignments they have for discipline -related courses , and individualized attention is given . pleting ELIP 5120, all students will be able to: ? identify areas of grammatical weakness and develop self -editing skills. ? e aware of and use academic vocabulary, phrasing, and style. ? effective lyparaphrasing, summarizing, and use of direct quotations according to a citation style guide. ? understand the pla cement and purpose of supporting information. Attendance and Course Work: Attendance is crucial in this course. In order to improve your writing and pass this course, it is important that you attend every class and do all the homework and writing assignme nts. If you cannot attend a class, you are still responsible for the work, discussions, materials, content, and assignments. If you are absent four class hours, your course grade will be lowered 3%, e.g. from 95% to 92%. If you have five missed class hour s, your c ourse grade will be lowered 6%. In other words, you may miss only up to three class hours without a direct penalty. These absences are for sickness or obligations for which you must miss class (for example, presenting at a conference). If you have a health problem, an emergency, or special circumstances that cause you to exceed these absences, please discuss your situation with the instructor. It is expected that you will spend approximately 4hours/week on homework for th is class (based on the standard 2 hours of homework for every hour of graduate credit). If you find that you are spending more time than that, please let me know. Since learning to revise and proofread your own papers is a large part of this course, you w ill do two drafts for each paper —each draft is graded and your final paper grade is the average of the two scores.
