玄奘还提出五不翻的原则: 1. 秘密故不翻:如咒语; 2. 多含故不翻:一词多义的词取音译,不取意译; 3. 此无故不翻。中国没有的东西,只取音译,不取意译; 4. 顺古故不翻。如阿耨菩提,完全可以意译为“无上正觉”。但自迦叶摩腾以来,一直采取音译,不取意译; 5. 生善故不翻。如般若是梵文prajno的音译。完全可以意译为智慧,但般若令人生敬。所以取音译,不取意译。
