Abstract
Along with the increase demand for tourism English talents in our country, colleges
in our country have set up tourism English curriculum, aiming at training a group of
compound talents who can fit the need of tourism development, have excellent
professional skills and also have a good command of English. However, how is the present
teaching of the course? Can it meet the learning needs of students? Can it meet the
employers’ demand for English? These problems are worth thinking and research. The
author aims to improve tourism English teaching and provides a useful reference for the
reform of tourism English teaching in other schools.
Needs analysis is the starting and center of ESP. As an important branch of ESP, the
teaching of tourism English should be based on needs analysis. Therefore, in this study,
the author, basing the study on the need analysis model of Hutchinson & Water and
Dudley-Evans & St. John, has carried out the questionnaire and interviews of 164 students
in the tourism major in higher vocational college, 5 graduates, 5 tourism English teachers
and 4 work units. Through quantitative and qualitative analysis of the survey results, the
author finds some problems in the tourism English teaching in Higher Vocational College,
which lie in the teaching methods, teaching means, teaching materials, teachers,

evaluation methods etc. Combining the results of needs analysis with the problems, the
author proposes some suggestions to improve the current situation of tourism English
teaching, such as making reasonable teaching goal; creating student-centered classes;
trying to develop school-based teaching materials; putting teaching focus on the students'
listening and speaking ability; adding cultural elements into the teaching content to reflect
the characteristics of tourism English; improving teachers’ compreh
