The table gives a breakdown of the different marriage figures in the UK during a long period from 1950 to 2000.
The nu mber of first marriages was 330 thousa nd in 1950, in creas ing steadily for the follow ing two decades and peak ing at 389 thousa nd in 1970.
However, from the n on, it experie need a sharp fall to 180 thousa nd in
2000, the lowest of the whole period. Similarly , the number of re-marriages had gen erally in creased from 78 thousa nd in 1950 to a peak of 140 thousa nd in 1980, though its lowest point (58,000) was reached in 1960.
