　　文化人类学是研究人与文化的科学，或者也可以讲是从文化这个角度研究人的科学。权威的《简明不列颠百科全书》将其定义为“研究人类社会中的行为、信仰****惯和社会组织的学科。”
　　英国《社会科学百科全书》也指出：“文化人类学关心的是作为社会存在的人及其****得的行为方式，而不是遗传传递的行为方式。”
　　美国学者W. H. 霍尔姆斯〔W. H. Holmes〕于1901年首次提出文化人类学这个术语，其英文是Cultural Anthropology，提出这一术语的目的就是与从生物特性角度研究人的体质人类学相区别。
　　J．F．拉菲托〔J．F．Lafitau，1670-1740〕，被传播学派学者推崇为文化人类学的奠基者。
　　“爱丁堡学派”代表人物：亨利•霍姆〔Henry Home，1696-1782〕、亚当•弗格森〔Adam Ferguson，1723-1816，被认为是英国古典进化论学派的先驱之一〕、罗伯特森〔W．Robertson，1721-1793〕
　　第一章 古典进化论学派
　　古典进化论学派是文化人类学史上的第一个学派，所以它的产生也可以看作是文化人类学作为一门独立科学正式诞生的界碑。该学派活跃于19世纪60年代至90年代这30年间。
　　该学派的产生应当从巴斯蒂安1860年出版的《历史上的人》算起，真正成熟的标志则是泰勒的《原始文化》和摩尔根的《古代社会》两部巨著的问世。
