hello, everybody! thank you. thank you. thank you, everybody. all right, everybody go ahead and have a seat. how is everybody doing today? (applause.) how about tim spicer? (applause.) i am here with students at wakefield high school in arlington, virginia. and wesquo;ve got students tuning in from all across america, from kindergarten through 12th grade. and i am just so glad that all could join us today. and i want to thank wakefield for being such an outstanding host. give yourselves a big round of applause. (applause.)i know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. and for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, itsquo;s your first day in a new school, so itsquo;s understandable if yousquo;re a little nervous. i imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now -- (applause) -- with just one more year to go. and no matter what grade yousquo;re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer and you couldsquo;ve stayed in bed just a little bit longer this know that feeling. when i was young, my family lived overseas. i lived in indonesia for a few years. and my mother, she didnsquo;t have the money to send me where all the american kids went to school, but she thought it was important for me to keep up with an american education. so she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, monday through friday. but because she had to go to work, the only time she could do it was at 4:30 in the , as you might imagine, i wasnsquo;t too happy about getting up that early. and a lot of times, isquo;d fall asleep right there at the kitchen table. but whenever isquo;d complain, my mother would just give me one of those looks and shesquo;d say, this is no picnic for me either, buster. (laughter.)so i know that some of you are still adjusting to being back at school. but isquo;m here today because i have something important to discuss with you. isquo;m here because i want to talk with you about your education and whatsquo;s expected of all of you in this new school at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, the best schools in the world -- and none of it will make a difference, none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities, unless you show up to those schools, unless you pay attention to those teachers, unless you listen to your parents and grandparents and other adults and put in the hard work it takes to succeed. thatsquo;s what i want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself. every single one of you has something that yousquo;re good at. every single one of you has something to offer. and you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. thatsquo;s the opportunity an education can provide.

a young idler,an old beggar
almost everyone knows the famous chinese saying:a young idler,an old beggar. throughout history,we have seen many cases in which this saying has again and again proved to be true.
it goes without saying that the youth is the best time of life, during which one's mental and physical states are at their peaks. it takes relatively less time and pains to learn or accept new things in a world full of changes and rapid developments. in addition, one is less likely to be under great pressure from career, family and health problems when young. therefore,a fresh mind plus enormous energy will ensure success in different aspects of life.
of course,we all know:no pains,no gains. if we don't make every effort to make good use of the advantages youth brings us,it is impossible to achieve any goals. as students,we should now try our best to learn all the subjects well so that we can be well prepared for the challenges that we will face in the future.
whatever one does, one should do it with confidence. if one has no confidence, there is little possibility that one would ever achieve anything, especially when oneis faced with drawbacks or hardships. this truth seems to be evident. however, in reality we do see a lot of people who complain that they like the ability to do something or that their difficulties are too great to be overcome. for someone, this might be true. but for many others, this only shows that they have lost heart.
why do people often feel frustrated even though they are capable of doing something? there are, among others, two main reasons. first, these people do have a correct estimate of themselves. second, they overestimate the difficulties.
it is possible to build up faith in oneself by having the right attitude towards onesquo;s abilities. we should never underestimate onesquo;s abilities. but believe in the proverb: where there is a will, there is a way. confidence is the promise for fulfilling a task successfully.
good afternoon, everyone!
the topic of my speech today is being a good listener.
good listening can always show respect, promote understanding, and improve interpersonal relationship.
many people suggest that parents should listen more to their children, so they will understand them better, and find it easy to narrow the generation gap; teachers should listen more to their students, then they can meet their needs better, and place themselves in a good relationship with their students; students should listen more to their classmates, thus they will help and learn from each other, and a friendship is likely to be formed.
what i want to stress is that each of us should listen more to others. show your respect and never stop others till they finish their talk; show you are interested by a supportive silence or a knowing smile; be open-minded to different opinions even though you donsquo;t like them. in a word, good listening can really enable us to get closer to each other.
thank you for your listening!
how to be popular
most people would like to be popular with others, but not everyone can achieve this goal. what is the secret to popularity? in fact, it is very simple. the first step is to improve our appearance. we should always make sure that we stay in good shape and dress well. when we are healthy and well-groomed, we will not only look better but also feel better. in addition, we should smile and appear friendly. after all, our facial expression is an important part of our appearance. if we can do this, people will be attracted to our good looks and impressed by our confidence.
another important step is developing more consideration for others. we should always put others first and place their interests before our own. it's also important to be good listeners; in this way people will feel comfortable enough to confide in us. however, no matter what we do, we must not gossip. above all, we must remember to be ourselves, not phonies. only by being sincere and respectful of others can we earn their respect. if we can do all of the above, i am sure popularity will come our way.

sports are more than competitions. to me, they mean growth under the care of others. i learned this the hard way.
i used to be very shy and often felt lonely. although i did well in all the academic subjects, i was afraid of physical education. my classmates often laughed at me.
“look at that girl,” they said. “her feet don’t leave the ground when she runs!”
their words embarrassed me. moreover, whenever the teacher organized some competitive games, no one in the class liked to have me as their partner or team member. as a result, i often ended up looking at others enjoy their games.
things would go on like that if not for a sports meet in my high school. by mistake, my name was put on the list of those who would compete in the women’s 1500 meters race. by the time people found the mistake, it was too late to change.
my desk-mate was a natural athlete. she said to me, “i couldn’t run that race in your place, because i’ve signed up for three items already.” other athletic girls of the class said the same.
i was utterly dumbfounded. 1500 meters! running against the best runners from other classes! and in front of students of the entire school! it would be the worst nightmare i’d ever have!
“you still have time to catch up because there is still one month before the sports meet,” they all said this to me, including my teacher.
my desk-mate patted me on the shoulder, “cool! you will run for our class! and we will do training together.” yes, this is not just for myself, but for my class too, i said to myself. but still, 1500 meters to me was like mount everest to a beginning climber. i had no idea even how to start my preparation.
fortunately, my desk-mate gave me a hand. every afternoon after class, several of us ran together. when the fear of being laughed at struck me, i saw others running right beside me. they gave me strengths. while we were running, some others would stand by the tracks cheering for us.
one month certainly couldn’t make me a good runner. but when i was standing behind the start line, i no longer felt lonely or afraid. i saw my classmates standing by the tracks waving at me as if about to run beside me.
with the shot of the starting gun, i dashed out and ran as fast as i could, as if it were a 200-meter race. soon i was out of breath and slowed down. other runners passed me one by one, and gradually i had no idea how many of them were still behind me. my legs were getting heavier and heavier, and i might fall down at any moment. however, i suddenly heard my classmates chanting my name. my desk-mate even ran along the tracks beside me and cheered for me at the same time, just like the month-long training we did together.
as expected, i was almost the last to cross the finish line. immediately, my classma
