fsuppressivesignalsunleashesanintrinsictendencytowardsoftheairwayknownasthebronchi().Here,mitted’basalcells(Pardo-Sagantaconsistsofbasalcellslocateddirectlyatopthebasementmembrane,etal.,2015a).luminalsecretoryandciliatedcells,andasmatteringofpulmonaryThemechanismsthatregulateinjury-inducedsegregationremainneuroendocrinecells(PNECs)(RockandHogan,2011;Rocketal.,).amongstbasalcellsubpopulationsthatpredicttheirfuturebehavior,ashasbeenshowninothersystemssuchastheintestine(Kimetal.,Basalcells2014).IthasbeenrecentlysuggestedthatdynamicreactiveoxygenBasalcellsaremorphologicallycharacterizedbytheirsmallheightspecieslevelsinbasalcellscanregulatetheirsymmetricversusrelativetoadjacentluminalcells,elldivision(Pauletal.,2014).Itwouldbeinterestingthebasementmembrane(;)(EvansandPlopper,toassesswhetherandhowreactiveoxygenspecieslevelsregulate1988).Atthemolecularlevel,basalcellsarecharacterizedbytheinjury-associatedbasalcellheterogeneity(Pauletal.,2014).expressionoftheN-terminus-truncatedisoformofTRP63(hereafterInmice,basalcells,atthepopulationlevel,areprimarilypresentreferredtoasp63),cytokeratin5(KRT5),nervegrowthfactorinthetracheaandmainstembronchi(al.,2014;Rockandreceptor(NGFR)andpodoplanin(PDPN)(al.,2014;RockHogan,2011;Rocketal.,2009).However,inhumans,basalcellsetal.,2009).Earlystudiesusingxenograftsofpurifiedbasalcellsextenddistallyintothesmallbronchioles().Whethertherearesuggestedthatthesecellscouldself-renewandweremultipotent,molecularorfunctionaldifferencesinthebasalcellsofthetracheameaningthattheycouldgeneratenotonlymorebasalcells,,secretoryandciliatedcells(Liuetal.,1994;Rocketal.,2010).Morethemurinesmallairway,whichlackssignificantnumbersofbasalrecently,anoidcells,urred,culturesandair-liquidinterface(ALI)cultures(Rocketal.,2009;histologicallymirrorsonlyasmallfractionofthemostdistalhumanTataetal.,2013).Furthermore,theidentificationofclonesofairwayairway().Basedlargelyonthepresenceofbasalcells,theracheahasbeenpositedasabettermodelforthestudyofhumanshasprovidedsomeinitialevidencethathumanbasalcellshumanairwaysdisease(al.,2014);however,itremainsaresimilarlymultipotentinvivo(Teixeiraetal.,2013).Theabilityunclearhowhumanairwaycelldiversitycorrespondstoitsmurineofbasalcellstorestorenormalnumbersofrelativelyrarecelltypes,,differentregionsofthemouseairwaymayDEVELOPMENT756:..REVIEWDevelopment(2017)144,755-766doi:
