the panion toGALENGalen of Pergamum (ad 129–) was the most influen-tial doctor of later antiquity, whose work was to influencemedical theory and practice for more than1,500years. Hewas a prolific writer on anatomy, physiology, diagnosis andprognosis, pulse-doctrine, pharmacology, therapeutics andthe theory of medicine; but he also wrote extensively onphilosophical topics, making original contributions to logicand the philosophy of science, and outlining a scientificepistemology which married a deep respect for empiricaladequacy with mitment to rigorous rational exposi-tion and demonstration. He was also a vigorous polemicist, deeply involved in the doctrinal disputes among the medicalschools of his day.
