The Triumph of the Egg is one of Sherwood Anderson’s most enduring works. And a few questions came into my mind at the first sight of the title, such as why could eggs achieve success and who was defeated at the same time? After reading it, I’m impressed by the interesting plots and the deep meaning it reflects.
To some extent, “I” am a witness to father’s failure. After marriage, he becomes ambitious and wants to get up in the world. He begins to start his own business, chicken raising and restaurant business, which both turned out to be a failure. Why father failed all the time although he is ambitious and always makes great efforts to do things. The answer is that he is on the wrong way to success.
First of all, he lacks some basic knowledge about the thing he is doing. When raising chicken, he didn’t build fences to prevent the chickens from going to the wheels. When running a restaurant, he doesn’t know the management skills which a successful business man should have. Secondly, father lacks his own idea of what to do next.
