Functions of foundation are:- a) To spread the load on larger area. to avoid over loading of sub soil. b) To prevent unequal settlement under ponents of structure by loading the sub soil by equal load per unit area. c) To prepare and provide a level surface to begin building operations. d) To provide anchorage to structure to prevent over turning. Types of Foundations a) Brick pillars are provided with isolated footings. b) Brick walls are provided with strip (spread) foundation. Loads on Foundation a) Brick pillars : i) Superimposed load carried by the pillar including selfweight of pillar above ground level(w). ii) Self weight of isolated footing and the soil above foundation concrete( WI) WI is estimated as 20% of(w). b) Brick Wall i) Superimposed load on wall per unit length including
