Different from the Moment-resisting and Concentrically Braced frames, the Knee Bracing bines excellent ductility and lateral stiffness by setting the diagonal brace to a knee element instead of the beam-column joint. The diagonal brace provides the major part of the required lateral stiffness, and at the same time the knee element acts as a “structural fuse”. Through the flexural yielding of the knee element under the major earthquake, the structure could dissipate most of the input energy. No damage would then occur to the main structural members and the rehabilitation could be very easy and not costly.
