编者按:文学研究很难。无论文论还是文本分析,都难以创新。其困难就在于,一是很多研究维度、研究
方法都被尝试了;二是大量的文本也被分析了。本刊认为,文学研究首先需要理论建构,而且这种建构
应该在已有理论的指导下,通过文本分析实现。不过,文本分析的目的应该在于对已有文学理论和研究
方法的验证、反思、修正和发展,而不是着重于揭示文本的主题思想,后者对作为科学的文学的建构和发
展作用不大,至少没有直接作用。

提要:马修· 阿诺德因文化批评为人熟知,古典主义文学观是研究其文化思想的基石。研究阿诺德的古典主义文
学观离不开对其时代背景的考察,其文学观的意义与其时代密切关联。他对希腊精神的选择是对时代需求的考量,他的
古典主义文学观是对古典文学与现代文学的重新审视,因而具有现代性,所以对当代文学批评与文化发展具有借鉴性。

Matthew A rnold ismost noted for his cultural criticism, and his classic literary theory is the basis for the study of his cultural
ideas. The study of V ictorian England is indispensable to the research on A rnold’s classicism, which is the significance of his
theory. In the light of the need of his age, he chose Hellenism as a corrective. And his classical literary theory is a reinterp reta
tion of the relationship between the classical and modern literature, and is thus imbued with the modern sp irit. H is app roach as
critic is enlightening to modern literary theory, as well as the development of cultural studies.
