The bar chart gives in formati on about male and female teachers in six types of educational institution in the UK in 2010. It shows what percentage of teachers was male and what perce ntage was female.
Women predominated in schools for children. This was particularly true of schools for very young childre n. Over 95 perce nt of nu rsery school teachers, for example, were female. The situation was similarly one-sided in primary schools, where over 90 perce nt of teachers were wome n.
Men and wome n were more equally represe nted in teachi ng in stituti ons cateri ng for older childre n and young adults: sec on dary schools and colleges. College lectures, for example, were 50 perce nt female and 50 perce nt male.
Males held a larger share of teachi ng posts in higher-level in stituti ons. This was particularly true for uni versities, where twice as many males were teachi ng staff tha n females.
Overall, wome n were more likely to hold the more typically mater nal role of teachi ng young childre n. Males, on the other hand, predo min ated in the higher status teachi ng role of uni versity lecturer.
