增词的变格——重复法
增词的另一种变格是重复。当然,其中有一种重复法和增词无关。原文为了强调,重复某些关键性的词,目的是使读者留下深刻的印象。英译汉时常常采取同样的重复手段,以达到同样的目的,如:
16. If I am to blame, you are to blame, too.
17. It is impossible to live in society and be independent of society.
18. It is as much your responsibility as mine.
19. Ignorance is the mother of fear as well as of admiration.
20. We must learn to look at problems all-sidedly, seeing the reverse as well as the obverse side of things.
21. We talk of ourselves, of our prospects, of the journey, of each other——of everything but our host and hostess.
22. The unit of weight is the gram, that of length is the meter, and that of capacity is the litre.
23. Big families had their own difficulties.
24. Matter can be changed into energy, and energy into matter.
25. They are fine actors. Smith is the finest I’ve ever seen.
26. Better be wise by the defeat of others than by your own.
有时候,英语原文中既没有重复也没有省略,但翻译时从修辞角度考虑,为了使译文生动,也可以采取汉语特有的重复手段,比如两个同义或近义的四字词组、四字对偶词组、迭词等,如:

28. He failed his examination because his work was careless
