Ludwig Wittgenstein
Letters to Russell, Keynes, and Moore
Edited, with an introduction, by G. H. von Wright
Some 123 letters and munications from a seminal
modern philosopher to his illustrious Cambridge friends are
made available in this volume. Of particular interest is the
correspondence to Rertrand Russell, most of which was written
1912 and 1921, when Wittgenstein was working on the
Tractatus. Included are 57 letters to Russell, 41 to Moore, and 25
to Keynes. The editor has rnents where necessary to
identify names arid explain events mentioned by Wittgenstein.
All of the letters to Russell and Moore were written in English;
the letters to Keynes that were written in German appear in the
original with English translations by Brian F. McGuinness.

"Black's book is, in effect, two books in one, and each of them is
very good. First, there is the useful 'Companion to the Tractatus':
the store of information that anyone who picked up the Trcictatus
would want to have by his side. Second, there are the interpretive
essays: always judicious, frequently illuminating. It is hard to see
how the 'Companion' could have been plete."

Editor's Preface
Wittgenstein wrote a great deal on the foundations of math-
ematics between 1929 and 1944. During this period, he discussed
the philosophical problems of the foundations in several sets of
lectures at Cambridge; among the last was that given in the Lent
and Easter terms of 1939. Norman Malcolm has described these
lectures in Ludwig Wzttgenst~in:A izfemoir; there is another brief
description, by D. A. T. Gasking and A. C. Jackson, in "Ludwig
Wittgenstein." 1 The lectures, which were given twice a week,
lasted two hours, and stein spoke entirely without notes.
The notes published here are based on those taken by students
at the lectures.
