自动化与自动化学科、专业
在日常生活中，较少听到“自动化”这个名词，更多听到的是什么什么是自动的、自动控制的、或全自动的。例如，全自动照相机、ATM、自动控制的红绿灯、自动门等。当然“自动化”设备，不仅应用与日常生活，更多的是应用于社会财富的创造业产业，包括农业（第一产业）、工业（第二产业）和服务业（第三产业），分别称之为农业自动化、工业自动化和服务自动化。与此同时，军事自动化（自动火炮、导弹、无人飞机、无人战车等）也是自动化的重要应用领域。
到目前为止，工业自动化对人类社会作出的贡献最大，在国民经济中占有举足轻重的地位，在提升国家综合实力方面起着重要作用；而服务自动化今年来发展最快，大有后来居上之势。
