特有”的概念是:一、这些少数民族为云南所独有;二、有的虽然在云南以外也有分布,但在历史上均是从云南移居的;而且目前绝大部分集中在云南境内。这15个民族分别是白族、哈尼族、傣族、傈僳族、拉祜族、佤族、纳西族、景颇族、布朗族、普米族、阿昌族、怒族、基诺族、德昂族、独龙族。
