The scarlet letter “A” was the clue of the novel. Through describing a love tragedy between the hero and heroine, this novel uncovered the darkness and hypocrisy of the current society. This thesis mainly analyzed the different symbolic meanings of the scarlet letter “A” with the development of the story.
