2．用作情态动词，后接动词原形，常用于否定句和疑问句中。

3．由need引起的一般疑问句中，肯定回答用must或have to，否定回答用needn't或don't have to。
—Need I answer the question?

—Yes, you must(have to)．/No, you needn't(don't have to)．

考点二　didn't need to do与needn't have done
didn't need to do表示“过去没必要做某事，实际上也没做”；而needn't have done则表示“本不必做某事，但实际上已经做了”。
I didn't need to go to school this Sunday, so I didn't get up until 9 a．m.
我这个星期天不必上学，因此我直到早上九点才起床。(我不必上学，也没去学校)
