Oliver Twist, written in 1837-38, is the second novel of Dickens.
1. In 1830s England, it was the Victorian age. the wealth determined voting rights. Therefore, the poor had no say in the laws that governed their lives, and the Poor Laws(济贫法) strictly regulated the ability to seek relief. Since begging was illegal, workhouses(贫民****艺所) were the only sources of relief. The workhouses were made to be deliberately unpleasant in order to discourage the poor from seeking their relief.
Since the poor had no voting rights, the State chose to recognize their existence only when mited crimes, died, or entered the workhouses.
2. When Dickens was 12 years old, his father was imprisoned for debt. Dickens was then sent to work in a factory, there he must work 10 hours a day. The misery of his childhood is a recurrent theme in his novels.

Oliver Twist: The main character of the story, He was abused as a young child, and only wants to be loved.
Nancy- A woman who works for Fagin .She is passionate(热烈的), caring, and loves Sikes.
Mr. Brownlow- An old warm-hearted man He takes Oliver in, and discovers his true parentage(身世).
Mrs. Maylie- An old woman who accepts Oliver into her home and finally gives him a loving atmosphere to live in.
Rose Maylie- The adopted niece of Mrs. Maylie who turns out to be Oliver’s Aunt. She is kind, loving, and a great joy in Oliver’s life.
Bad guys
Fagin: He is a powerful crime leader who has an affection for only money and will kill anyone who stands in his way.
Monks/ Edward Leeford- Oliver’s older half brother who does not want to split(分开) his inheritance with the bastard(私生子) child. He destroys the evidence of Oliver’s mother, and is a cohort(群,队) of Fagin and his gang(团伙) 。
Bill Sikes - Another evil character who is a member of Fagin’s gang. He has a little white dog that follows him everywhere.
