Dear Prof. Ingemann:
As you can appreciate from my signature my area of expertise hardly qualifies me for writing a letter of mendation for a prospective graduate student in your department. However, I have a serious and long standing interest in languages. After 3 years of Chinese studies at IUPUI, I entered an intensive Chinese language course during a sabbatical in Beijing last winter and spring. Ms. Chen who wishes to enter graduate studies in your department became my tutor. I feel strongly that Ms. Chen has unusual talents and abilities qualifying her for your program and I hope that you will consider my observations and remarks in evaluating her application.
Ms. Chen is an outstanding teacher. She teaches all the subtleties of Chinese word usage and syntax so effectively because her knowledge of English is so superior. Her English conversation was particularly impressive considering that she has had very limited opportunities to meet native English-speaking people in the past.
Our many hours of lectures became more sophisticated with time, emphasizing more and more the striking differences between the literal meaning of words in either pared to the meaning of the same words when used mon everyday language.
