THE LION AND THE MOUSE Lion was awakened from sleep by a Mouse running over his face. Rising up in anger, he caught him and was about to kill him, when the Mouse piteously(可怜兮兮地) entreated(哀求), saying:“If you would only spare(宽恕) my life, I would be sure to repay your kindness.” The Lion laughed and let him go. It happened shortly after this that the Lion was caught by some hunters, who bound him by strong ropes to the ground. The Mouse, recognizing his roar, came up, and gnawed(咬) the rope with his teeth, and setting him free, exclaimed:“You ridiculed(嘲笑) the idea of my ever being able to help you, not expecting to receive from me any repayment of your favour, but now you know that it is possible for even a Mouse to confer(授予;给予) benefits on a Lion.” Read and remember the following expressions: 1. reflect on回忆;回想 2. be\e aware of意识到… 3. in and around四周 4. from behind sth从…背后 5. be scared to death 吓死 6. be shaped like像… 7. bird-like象鸟一样的 8. yellow-spotted黄色斑点的 9. wise-looking长相聪慧的 10. the depths of the ocean 海洋深处 Once there was a young man who came to ask Socrates how to learn philosophy(哲学).
