“Zhong Qiu Jie” could date from the Zhou dinasty.
It was later given a mythological legends of
Chang-E Ben Yue.
According to Chinese mythology, the earth
once had 10 suns circling over it. One day, all 10 suns appeared together, all scorching the earth. The earth was saved when a strong archer, Hou Yi, eeded in shooting down 9 of the suns. Yi asked the elixir of life ,however, his wife Chang-E ate it. Thus started the legend of the lady in the moon to whom young Chinese girls would pray at the Mid-Autumn Festival.
