What is a good description?
To describe an experience, person, place, or object is to give a verbal account in detail. A good description helps the reader see, hear, and feel what you are describing; it also does more, for it helps the reader know the experience, person, place, or object you are describing. If you are describing a sunset, the task is not only to help your reader see as a camera "sees," but also to experience with you what it is like to see the sunset. Remember, no one sees, hears, and experiences something exactly as you do. Do not ever simply give in when e across difficulties to describe. Your descriptions e from your own perceptions.
When you describe someone or something, you give your readers a picture in words. To make the world picture as vivid and real as possible, you must observe and record specific details that appeal to your readers’ senses (sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch). More than any other type of essay, a descriptive paper needs sharp, colorful details.
There was an old fan in the window.
The blades of the rusty window fan clattered and whirled as they blew out a stream of warm, soggy air.
Your main purpose in writing description is to convey to your reader your dominant impression of the person, place, object, or experience you are describing. Vivid details are the key to descriptive essays, enabling your audience to picture and experience what you describe.
