1.  建立翻译学学科的条件,学科发展现状
霍尔姆斯认为翻译学作为一门独立的学科已经具备了建立的条件和必要性。
在过去几个世纪中,翻译研究处于随意(incidental)、无序的(desultory),许多原先从事相近学科研究的人由语言学、语言哲学和文学转向翻译领域,还有一些人来自表面上并不相近的学科如信息理论、逻辑学和数学等领域,这些研究者把原学科的范式、半范式、模型及方法带入翻译研究。他认为,从表面上看翻译研究的局面是一片混乱,但实际上关于翻译研究的独立学科正在成型。
