Middle school English Class Discipline Control under
the New Syllabus

【Abstract】 In order to cultivate more English experts for the economic globalization, the
ministry of education proposed a new syllabus in 1999. With its development, the ministry of
education carried out a New Standard for English Course in July 2001. One of the objectives
which was obviously written down in the new syllabus is to call for the learners’ learning form of
experience, practice, participation, cooperation munication. This objective is greatly
different from the teacher’s leading form of teaching, and students have much freedom in class.
The new syllabus has been carried out for 5 years, and its teaching contents and teaching form
have been applied by English teachers. But, after the new syllabus being carried out, the role
between teachers and students has changed a little that students have much freedom in class now,
so class discipline has been a problem for English teachers when giving lessons. Based on the
difficulty, this article is aimed to analyze the reasons why class discipline takes place and factors
which are related to class discipline. Meanwhile, because Shenzhen’s English teaching quality is
one of the highest in Guangdong province, especially that of Nanshan district. So this article will
have a sample questionnaire investigation about English class discipline control for teachers and
students from two main middle schools of Nanshan district. With the help of the mean score and
percentage analysis to all the collected data, I find out some valuable means of controlling English
class discipline, and point out a way for English teachers how to control class discipline and for
the future research in this field.
